Leon Louie Dolice Bio Title

Leon Dolice Bio PhotoLeon Dolice was born in Vienna, Austria in 1892. He was twenty eight years old when he crossed the Atlantic in 1920 and arrived in what was to become his beloved New York City.

Having been a young itinerant artist in Europe and having travelled to most of the continent’s capitals viewing the works of the masters, in New York he felt most at home in the Bohemianism of Greenwich Village.
Leon used the city’s landmarks as his subjects, and chose New York’s artists as his friends, such as George Luks and Herb Roth and he found early success with his etchings. Over time, he travelled to other Eastern cities for new subjects, always returning to Manhattan.

In the late 1930’s, sales of his etchings began to decline and he turned to pastels, linocuts, and painting. His subject matter, for the most part, captured many New York street scenes and important landmarks. Looking at his work today, viewers are drawn into the pre-WWII New York City known and loved by Dolice. His work resides in many museums and private collections, among them the Museum of the City of New York, and the New York Historical Society.

Leon Dolice passed away in 1960.
